I hear many Muslims expressing their opinion about Ramadan and claiming that it is about thinking of the poor. I totally disagree and would like to write down my opinion.
It’s about poor people?
If Ramadan was about thinking of the poor, the poor would not have to fast. This means that only the rich would have to fast.
There are certain obligations in Islam, which only applies to the rich, such as alms or pilgrimage. Since fasting is a universal duty for Muslims, that can not be the purpose of the cause.
What is it about?
First of all, I would like to point out that I am only writing my own opinion here and that I am not a scholar.
I think fasting is about two essential things.
- To Reconsider.
- Draw a balance of the past year
Someone had said to me that you can eat and drink, etc. and reconsider there too, but I disagree there. When you fast, you have no distractions whatsoever and can think more clearly about your environment.
Many people go to sleep because time does not pass. I think more like this: Does the time not go over? Then you have more time to Reconsider ! And that, I think, is the purpose of Ramadan.
Draw the balance
In Ramadan, things that bother people most in the world are forbidden:
- Alcohol / Drugs
- Devotion to women
If you let those elements out of your life and give them up for a whole day, you can take stock and get a better idea of what your body got used to most.
For example, I’m a smoker and coffee drinker, and I find it scary every year how much I’ve got my body used to these “drugs”. Based on my Ramadan logic, I would have to do something about it by next year and have a better balance every year.
If a person wants to think of arms, he just has to enter the right search terms in Google Image Search or drive to the next poor district. But you do not change anything if you just think about it. So it brings nothing productive in your life.
However, by doing what I have described above, I think brings much greater benefits and that people can really make a difference. Even if they do not change anything in the world, at least they will change something in their own lives.
